NTN, CNIC and STRN Verification in FBR Digital Invoicing

FBR digital invoices validate buyer and seller identity through NTN, CNIC and STRN. Here is what each identifier is, why FBR checks them, and how verification affects your invoice.

What NTN, CNIC and STRN are

The NTN (National Tax Number) identifies a taxpayer, the CNIC identifies an individual, and the STRN (Sales Tax Registration Number) identifies a sales-tax-registered person. FBR uses these to know exactly who is on each side of an invoice.

Businesses are usually identified by NTN/STRN, while unregistered individuals may be identified by CNIC.

Why FBR validates them

Digital invoicing checks these identifiers against FBR's records so that invoices are issued to and from real, correctly-registered parties. A malformed or invalid identifier causes the invoice to be rejected.

Buyer registration status also affects the invoice — for example whether further tax applies to an unregistered buyer.

Registration type and active status

Beyond the number itself, the buyer's registration type (registered vs unregistered) and active taxpayer status influence how the invoice is treated. Getting this right keeps the tax fields correct.

This is why capturing and checking the buyer's details up front matters.

How Digi Invoice handles verification

Digi Invoice captures NTN/CNIC and registration type, checks the format, and validates the whole invoice against FBR's rules before it is posted — so identity issues are caught before submission.

That keeps invoices clean and avoids rejections caused by buyer or seller identifier problems.
